The day when Kak Tipah got engaged..
Aniwae Kak Tipah got engaged yesterday to a guy named Syah..i only got to meet him yesterday..a fellow scarmbler rid but he rides an XR4 lar while me..my midget srambler!! Hehee...aniwae..it was the first big day for my cuz to be officially engaged to tis guy. And the thing is..somehow this guys family is somehow connected to my father's side of the family..small world. (Aniwae..dis cuzzin of myn is related to mum's side..) I think the malay society in Singapore is significantly small and somehow..there'll always be some connections somehow!
Aniwae..regarding engagemet in the Malay-Muslim culture..(based on my ankle deep knowledge..mine jelly-drive not as powerful as WLY!!)..it is not nice in our culture to go out secretly with another person of an opposite sex. Parents should always be kept aware of the situation and hence, the engagement policy. Its a practice where the guy's family will come over to the gals house to officially seek permission from the gal's side of the family for tat guy to hook up with d gal. The engagement period usually last max a year. The guy's family will come bearing a few gifts..(plus money!!) and a ring to signify the engagement. The guy's mother will place the ring on the chosen gal's finger once the gal's side of the family agree to the engagement.
In d old days..the guy may only know the gal by sight and hence an engagement allows for the guy to get to know the gal more and not commit to marriage first..just in case.. Since this does not yet signify marriage, by ryt.. dey still should not go out alone with each other alone. I noe this rarely works in our society today due to our open culture of the new era. But being in a Malay-Muslim society..religion and tradition is important for one..to uphold the sanctity of our way of life. **Hint to akak..AhemZZ!!** Aniwae, im happy tat my cuzzin took tis step..Heheh..and dese a a few fotoes i took from my k700i during the prep..
