Cant help it...i was washing the clothes at the backyard when i saw this magnificent species. Spent a whole day looking for info on it. At last..i found a picture that matches it and searched for more info on it. At first sight..by ofserving the beak, i thought it was a predatory bird, as large as half my arm's length and eyes blaring red. "My god, will the yellow vented bulbul chick in the nest at one of my potted plants be in danger??" i thought to myself. The parents where chirping away maybe in an effort to chase the danger which lurks... but after research. What i thought was somewhat wrong..this is the info i present from Wikipedia;
The Asian Koel (Eudynamis scolopacea), or Common Koel, is a member of the cuckoo order of birds, the Cuculiformes, which also includes the roadrunners, the anis, and the Hoatzin.
It is a mainly resident breeder in tropical southern Asia from IndiaSri Lanka to south China and Australasia, but birds at the fringes of the range and on high ground are summer visitors, migrating to warmer areas in winter.
The Asian Koel is a bird of light woodland and cultivation. It is a brood parasite and lays its single in the nests of a variety of birds, including House Crows and honeyeaters. The young Koel does not always evict its host's chicks, and initially calls like a crow.
The Asian Koel is a large, long-tailed, cuckoo at 45 cm. The male is greenish-black, with a pale green bill and red eyes. The female is brownish above and whitish below, but is heavily striped and spotted brown on the underparts and white on the upperparts. She has an olive or green beak and red eyes.
The Asian Koel takes a variety of insects,caterpillars, eggs and small vertebrates. It occasionally eats fruit. This is a noisy species, with a persistent and loud "ku-OO ku-OO" calls as well as other cackles and screams.
Then today, i saw another majestic bird perched on the roof of the the neighbouring house. This time, i was alert and aware to grab Kcik's digicam to snap a picture. Woah...look at this. Slightly small and blurrish. Maybe u cant make it out but if you are experienced with roof-tile sizes, especially of this kind, compare! Man...at first sight, this may look like an eagle or something. But after some research (at the expense of study time..but i AM studying still!) , i discovered that in Singapore, there might only be 2 different species of eagles and one of them is a fish eating eagle. Both looks different. So i guess, it must be the Black Kite. Kites (not those u play with that has strings..) but a species of bird, looks like an eagle and hence commonly known as the Singapore Eagle. Woaaah...it looks somewhat like this..but im awaiting confirmation from this experienced bird-watcher that i hooked up with off the net.. Mr Wee. Hopefully he can help me identify this bird or i'll go CRAZY! That's how i am, if i really want to know something, i'll go all out to research on it..i have this insatiable spirit of curiosity. But the irony is, usually i will slog my ass off, researching on it myself. I dun really like to depend on others but i have to change this character cause it is much easier and efficient to get help of experts. BUT, this is not an excuse to only let the experts possess all the knowledge. One must have expertise in something too and yet have knowledge of other things. This way, you won't be easily played out. There must be critical enquiry involved. Not just plain spoonfeeding.
"Well, back to studies Zola!!"
May Allah guide us all..bless us with happiness and health n protect us from the dangers of this world, physically or mentally. Help us become successful people in the world and after...
